Over $500 Million in Results for our Clients

Since 1986, the attorneys of Liss + Earls—past and present—have recovered an estimated $500 million in verdicts, settlements, and insurance claim recoveries for policyholders*.

For nearly four decades, the attorneys of Liss + Earls have secured outstanding results for homeowners, businesses, and families facing catastrophic property losses and denied insurance claims.

Now led by Managing Shareholder Jason J. Liss, over our 40-year history, our litigation attorneys have recovered hundreds of millions in settlements, judgments, and verdicts involving fire and explosion claims, business interruption disputes, storm damage, wind and water loss, insurance agent negligence, and serious injury or wrongful death cases related to property loss events.

Many of our largest victories remain confidential by client request. These matters include eight-figure payments for a logistics hub crippled by roof collapse, a hospitality chain destroyed by hurricane-driven water, and a marina that lost an entire season’s revenue when a transformer surge ignited its service building.

Beyond the headline numbers, our docket is filled with successes that stem from the entire spectrum of risks property owners face. We routinely secure full payments for severe water damage and flooding, roofs and walls crushed by falling or uprooted trees, and the freeze-thaw cycles that cause ice storms, snow melt, and winter-related damage or precipitate sudden building and structural collapses. When insurance agent negligence or malpractice leaves a gap in coverage, or when a carrier issues a wrongful insurance claim denial, we step in to correct the record and recover every dollar available. These matters span owner-occupied homes, student apartments, manufacturing plants, logistics hubs, grocery chains, hospitality venues, and historic landmarks—and unfortunately, sometimes involve parallel personal-injury claims for burns, blast injuries, or wrongful death that our trial team litigates alongside the property-damage action, restoring both the asset’s value and the well-being of the people who live or work within it.

The results described on this page are based on the specific facts, circumstances, and applicable law of each individual case. Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome in future cases. Every case is unique and must be evaluated on its own merits. Some results listed may have been obtained by attorneys no longer actively practicing with the firm.

Some of the Extraordinary results obtained for our Clients

$25 Million (estimated) – Class Action Against Insurer. Recovery for policyholders in a class-action lawsuit involving insurers’ failure to properly calculate claims.

$21 Million – Awarded to the children of a couple tragically killed in a Wisconsin propane gas explosion.

$10 Million – Recovery for severe personal injuries sustained in a gas explosion.

$8.6 Million – Tennessee apartment building sustained extensive water damage after freeze loss. Jason J. Liss turned an outright coverage denial into an $8.6 million settlement for a Memphis apartment complex that sustained freeze-related water damage. The insurer had invoked the policy’s vacancy exclusion, but Liss methodically gathered maintenance records, weather data, and expert reports, then paired them with a tight legal analysis that dismantled the exclusion defense. Faced with that evidence, the carrier reversed its position and paid almost the full loss—placing the matter among Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s Top Settlements of 2023.

$8.5 Million – Automotive Supplier Property Insurance Dispute. Jason J. Liss forced the insurer to honor a business-income claim after two massive industrial presses failed at the automotive supplier’s plant. When the insurer paid only $300,000 and later refused statutory appraisal—insisting our client had no loss—we sued, won summary judgment compelling appraisal, and secured an award of $5.46 million. The court then entered judgment for $5.16 million plus penalty interest of $1,695.89 per day, pushing the total past $8.5 million.

$7.5 Million – Jason J. Liss and Stuart Sklar represented estates of two employees killed in natural gas explosion

$7.325 Million – Settlement for damage to a manufacturing facility after the insurer initially paid only $1.2 million.

$7 Million – Recovery in a lawsuit for damage to student apartment buildings, including over $356,000 in penalty interest, after an insurer attempted to pay only $2.8 million.

$5.1 Million – Michigan luxury mansion suffered extensive wind and water damage. Jason J. Liss represented the insured, who owned a 20,000-square-foot mansion in Clarkston and suffered extensive wind and water damage. The insurer, Farm Bureau, initially paid only $414,776 and then filed a declaratory-relief action claiming it owed nothing more, citing exclusions for fraud, faulty workmanship, neglect, freezing, and failure to comply with post-loss duties. After extensive litigation, Jason prevailed on behalf of our client.

$5 Million – Settlement from a property insurer for extensive warehouse damage.

$5 Million—Represented the estate of a homeowner tragically killed in a house explosion caused by natural gas.

$4.3 Million—A door supply company recovered over 4 million in this 2023 insurance settlement after its insurer initially refused to pay for extensive property damage sustained during a covered loss. Represented by Jason J. Liss, the plaintiff challenged the denial and presented detailed documentation of the damage, business interruption losses, and policy obligations. After litigation commenced, the insurer reversed course and agreed to pay the full value of the claim.

$4 Million – Obtained for fire damage to a bowling complex.

$3.77 Million – Southfield snow and ice, along with resulting fire damage to a large commercial structure. In a high-stakes commercial property insurance dispute, Jason J. Liss turned a carrier’s partial pay-and-deny strategy into a $3.77 million recovery for a Michigan building owner after three separate roof-related disasters—snowmelt flooding, a torch fire started by roofers, and a drain backup deluge—all struck within just six weeks. The insurer had agreed to the fire appraisal award but stonewalled two water-damage claims; Liss sued, won summary judgment compelling payment, secured consequential business-income damages and 12 % penalty interest, and then pressed the case on appeal until the carrier capitulated with a seven-figure settlement.

$3.65 MillionJason J. Liss and Stuart Sklar secured for a homeowner whose large custom home burned after wrongful denial and accusations of arson by the insurance company.

$2.3 Million—Former Furniture Factory Roof Collapse and Water Loss. A building owner in West Michigan suffered extensive damage to a large former furniture factory, currently leased to various small businesses, from a roof collapse and resulting water-related damage. Ann-Marie E. Earls and Joseph L. Milanowski represented the property owner against the insurer and negotiated a $2.3 million settlement of the litigation arising from the denial of the loss claim.

$2.2 Million – Settlement for significant ice and water damage to an apartment complex.

$2 MillionJason J. Liss and Michael Fabian received a judgment for a grocery store owner after their insurer wrongfully denied coverage for a roof collapse.

$1.6 Million – Obtained for the wrongful death of a teenager killed in a natural gas explosion.

Michigan Property Insurance Claim Attorneys with Large Verdicts & Settlements.
Thank you so much for achieving excellent results on our business insurance claim. Your diligent efforts resulted in a multi-million-dollar judgment which was over 2,000% higher than what the insurance company paid prior to your involvement. Our business income claim was a complex one and we would highly recommend you to anyone who is need of precise legal knowledge and its strategic application.
Me and my son Michael cannot thank Michael Fabian & Jason Liss enough for their outstanding work in our homeowners claim against State Farm. Fabian & Liss worked with us and were relentless in pursuit of justice. It was a long, treacherous road for our family, both financially and emotionally, with all State Farm's dirty tricks, stalling, lying, appealing each win, and dragging it out. In the end, our champions for justice came through! During the whole process, they went above and beyond the call of duty, reassuring me and helping me to get through it. What really impressed me most about these guys was their attention to detail and their patience in explaining the process to me while I was in an emotional state. They made a stressful situation more bearable. Their professionalism, expertise, and dedication to my case was evident every step of the way. If you are battling an unreasonable, duplicitous, underhanded insurance company, then I highly recommend top-notch legal representation to go after these dirty rotten scoundrels. They will win for you.
